Understanding Garniture Tape Materials
Garniture tapes are critical consumables on every cigarette maker — from Hauni Protos to Molins MK9. Choosing the wrong tape material can lead to frequent replacements, poor rod quality, and unnecessary downtime.
Material Comparison
| Material | Max Temp | Lifespan | Best For | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Linen | 80°C | 40-60h | Standard production | $ |
| Kevlar (Aramid) | 180°C | 120-200h | High-speed / high-temp | $$ |
| Hybrid (Kevlar + PTFE coated) | 200°C | 200-300h | Ultra-high speed > 8000cpm | $$$ |
Machine-Specific Recommendations
Hauni Protos 70/80/90
Protos machines running at 7000+ cpm benefit most from Kevlar tapes with PTFE center coating. The coating reduces friction during the garniture tongue phase and significantly extends tape life.
Recommended: 2715x18.5mm Kevlar garniture tape with center coating
Molins MK9 / MK9.5
MK9 machines operate at lower speeds (4000-5500 cpm) where linen tapes are still cost-effective. However, Molins Super 9 models with higher speeds should use Kevlar.
Recommended: 2600x17mm linen (standard) or Kevlar (high-speed)
G.D 121
G.D makers use proprietary tape dimensions. Always verify OEM part numbers before ordering.
Recommended: Kevlar hybrid with PTFE coating for maximum uptime
Installation Tips
- Always clean the garniture bed before installing a new tape
- Check tape tension — too tight causes edge cracking, too loose causes slipping
- Run the machine at 50% speed for the first 15 minutes to seat the tape
- Never mix tape materials on the same machine
