The Cost of Premature Garniture Assembly Failure
Garniture assemblies are among the most expensive consumables on cigarette making machines. A single failure can cause 4-8 hours of unplanned downtime. Here are the top 5 causes of premature failure and how to prevent them.
1. Improper Lubrication
The problem: Insufficient or incorrect lubricant causes heat buildup and accelerated wear on the garniture tongue and suction band.
The fix: Use the lubricant specified in your machine manual. For Hauni Protos machines, apply lubricant every 2 hours of operation.
2. Misalignment
The problem: Even 0.5mm misalignment between the garniture tongue and the suction band causes uneven wear and hot spots.
The fix: Check alignment every preventive maintenance cycle. Use feeler gauges to verify gap consistency.
3. Tobacco Blend Issues
The problem: High-moisture or high-reconstituted-sheet blends produce more dust that accumulates on the garniture surface.
The fix: Increase cleaning frequency when running non-standard blends.
4. Incorrect Tape Tension
The problem: Overtensioning stretches the garniture tape, reducing its lifespan by up to 50%.
The fix: Use a tension gauge. For reference: Hauni garniture tapes should run at 25-30N tension.
5. Debris Accumulation
The problem: Tobacco dust, glue residue, and fine particles build up between the tape and the garniture bed.
The fix: Schedule a complete garniture clean every 200 operating hours.
