KDF Filter Rod Molding Machine Spare Parts Guide: Spare Parts, Generations, and Maintenance

The Hauni KDF (Continuous Double Filter) series is the most widely installed filter rod forming platform in the global tobacco industry. From 400 meters/min of the KDF 2 to over 600 meters/min of the KDF 5/6, these machines process cellulose acetate tow at high speed into precision filter rods. Understanding their spare parts ecosystem is essential for reducing downtime and controlling costs.

The KDF Family: Generations Compared

model speed launch time status remarks
KDF 2 400 m/min 1970s-80s widely installed Mechanical control, robust design
KDF 3 500 m/min 1990s Common in medium-sized factories PLC upgraded, faster strand processing
KDF 4 600+ m/min 2000s Current mainstream Servo drive, touchscreen, modular

Critical Spare Parts by System

1. Filter rod loosening system

  • Tow opening rollers — serrated rollers that separate and spread cellulose acetate tow. Wear patterns cause uneven filter density.
  • Stretching rollers — maintain tow tension. Bearing replacement every 6-12 months is typical.
  • Plasticizer application rollers — apply triacetin or glycerol. Roller surface wear affects filter hardness consistency.

2. Filter Rod Molding System

  • Garniture tongue and horn — the most wear-intensive assembly on any KDF. Replace at 500-1000 hours depending on tow type.
  • Heated sealing drum — seals the longitudinal seam of plug wrap paper. Thermocouple and heater band failures are common.
  • Cooling rails — set the plug wrap adhesive after sealing. Surface scoring causes seam quality issues.
  • Cutting knife assembly — rotating and stationary knives for rod cutoff. Carbide-tipped knives last 3-5x longer than standard steel.

3. Conveying and Handling System

  • Suction belts — perforated belts that transport cut filter rods. Hole pattern and material grade must match the drum geometry.
  • Plug transfer drums — vacuum drums that pass rods to downstream equipment. Surface pitting causes rod misalignment.
  • Guide rails — carbide or ceramic wear strips in the rod path. Low cost but frequent replacement prevents rod damage.

4. Heating and Sealing System

  • Heater bands and thermocouples — maintain sealing temperature at 140-180°C. Thermocouple drift causes seam defects.
  • Cooling blocks — water-cooled rails that set the seal. Flow restrictions from mineral buildup are a known issue.
  • Perforation rollers — create ventilation holes in filter plugs. Needle breakage causes incomplete perforation patterns.

Recommended Maintenance Plan

  • Daily: Check garniture tongue wear, clean suction belt grooves, verify heater temperature
  • Weekly: Inspect cutting knife edge, clean plasticizer rollers, check belt tension
  • Monthly: Measure drum roller runout, replace worn guide rails, check thermocouple accuracy
  • Quarterly: Replace garniture tongue and horn, service bearings on tow rollers, inspect drive belts
  • Annually: Full machine overhaul — replace all seals, belts, bearings, and wear surfaces

KDF 2/3/4 Spare Parts Compatibility

Some components are interchangeable across generations while others are model-specific:

  • Interchangeable: Cutting knives (standard sizes), guide rails, heater bands, thermocouples
  • Partially compatible: Suction belts (same width but drum pitch changed between KDF 3 and 4), tow opening rollers (width consistent, serration pattern changed)
  • model specific: Garniture tongue and horn assemblies, sealing drum assemblies, PLC/controller modules, servo drive units

Please verify the part number before placing an order against the machine's serial number before ordering cross-generation replacements.

KDF Spare Parts Procurement Guidelines

We maintain a comprehensive inventory of KDF 2, KDF 3, and KDF 4 spare parts covering all the categories above. Our parts are manufactured to OEM specifications with the same material grades and tolerances required for continuous high-speed operation.

If you operate a KDF line and need help identifying the correct parts for your specific machine configuration, our technical team can assist with cross-referencing and specification matching.
